When it comes to disability? This seems to happen very rarely. In recent years things have improved to a certain degree. There is Chronic Illness Cat and that provides a very much needed source of community or validation. I've found places for fashion with a chronic illness like Spoonie Style-Not Just Cute Pajamas but what seems to be missing for me is a much larger presence of feminist and critical theory aware blogs raising disability into the broader contexts. Frequently I find myself wishing that someone would start a blog that would give critiques, stories, life skills, tips, the ups and downs of navigating an able bodied centred world from the perspective of living with disability and chronic illness. Something that would give me the same sense of validation and community that I am craving.
And I kept waiting. Wondering why someone wasn't writing these blogs? Only then I realized that I was someone. I also have a lot of opinions. When it comes to my friends I've always been very open about disability. Hopefully if like me you have been waiting for more of these spaces to appear in the wide world of the internet you will find some measure of comfort, validation and hopefully all of us will increase our own awareness. Most importantly if you had like me been waiting for other voices to appear you will find yourself with enough spoons to also join the conversation in your own way either by jumping into the comments section, using this blog as a spring board for conversations or jumping into the deep end with me and making your own blog.
At this point I don't have a posting schedule set or in mind. Likely after this first post and one giving a context of my disabilities there is going to be a gap of time where I build up a small prewritten back log that I can draw on for times of fatigue or flare ups to allow for some consistency. During this time I'm more than open to feed back if there are particular topics you want to read about.
Keep tuned though.
And may the spoons forever be in your favor.
